Are you thinking about a career as a Residential Valuation Surveyor..

Are you looking for a lucrative job opportunity..

Are you looking for opportunities to become a self-employed consultant..

What will the job entail

Your role will be varied, as you will spend much of your working day inspecting, measuring, evaluating and putting together reports for your clients on a wide range of residential properties. Most of the positions are home or office-based, making this first choice for any career-minded individuals wishing to combine their technical, professional and people skills.

This is a high-status professional career choice that suits those wishing to be employed or to go freelance and attracts large numbers of career-changers wanting to take a new direction

What are the entry and qualification requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the Diploma in Home Inspection (DipHI), which is the foundation qualification that will lead to a career as a residential valuation surveyor. A simple bolt-on module known as the Valuation for Secured Lending Module is all you will need to add to your Dip HI to enable you to enter the world of valuation surveying.

The starting point to becoming a residential valuation surveyor and the length of time this will take, will depend on whether you already have relevant experience/qualifications in residential property surveying or construction technology and processes.

Training is open to anyone wanting a change of career, providing they are capable of gaining the necessary skills and knowledge.

The Dip HI is a level 4 qualification, similar to a BTEC HND or foundation degree, so if you are considering a change of career you will need to be confident in your ability to study at this level.

To become a home inspector you must demonstrate that you have all the skills and knowledge needed to do the job. These are set out in the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Home Inspectors. The NOS have been developed by Asset Skills, the Sector Skills Council responsible for property services and housing.

As a qualified residential valuation surveyor, you should:

* have a thorough knowledge of construction and surveying methods and Building Regulations
* be able to recognise the extent and urgency of construction defects
* be able to take precise measurements and accurately record inspection details in writing and electronically
* excellent oral and written communication skills
* analytical skills
* the ability to work as part of a team, and to develop and maintain working relationships and contacts with other professionals
* market awareness
* good numerical skills.
* work to high standards of ethics
* be able to work methodically and consistently have excellent communication and negotiating skills
* treat all information in accordance with confidentiality and data protection requirements
* have a polite, tactful and professional manner.

An alternative for some new entrants is to gain a degree accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), which allows them to become professionally qualified (chartered), although general practice surveyors may work as chartered or technical surveyors. (Tech RICS). This process will take around 5 years to complete and is a much slower pathway into the valuation and surveying industry than the Modular Dip HI /Valuation for Secured Lending route..
